Abstract

In the current era of high global mobility, the growing number and diversity of overseas trained psychiatrists practising in Australia and New Zealand provide a plethora of new perspectives and approaches on how to improve mental health: but how does the College support them in their endeavours to gain Fellowship?
This session will provide an overview of the issues facing overseas trained psychiatrists and provide information on a range of strategies that can be used to help them within an Australian work environment and with their pathway to Fellowship. This 90-minute workshop will explore the following key issues:
Role of the employer versus the role of the College
Barriers to Fellowship
Adapting to Australian systems: the impact of language and culture
Fellows involved in training: what are the challenges?
Useful approaches to assisting overseas trained psychiatrists gain Fellowship
Examples of non-clinical support and development: Mentoring and other programs
