The publication by a group of human rights lawyers of the details of a prison massacre concealed by the authorities for over a year, could be a turning point in breaking the silence that has surrounded government atrocities and the fate of the many dead and 'disappeared' victims of Algeria's civil war. On 4 March, La Nation , one of the few remaining Independent weeklies, followed this up with the first human rights dossier to dwell on government — as opposed to islamist — atrocities. The Issue was not published in Algeria, but in France, Le Monde Diplomatique published it in full. Index publishes for the first time in English, excerpts from the dossier as well as an Intervlew with Its editor, Sallma Ghezali (see page 100)
