Freedom from fear

Abstract

On 10 July 1991, Aung San Suit Kyi , Burma's leading politician and dissident, was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament. On 10 December 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was neither in Strasbourg nor in Oslo for the award ceremonies: for the last two years she has been under house arrest in Rangoon.

What follows is one of a number of previously unpublished essays (included in a volume published by Penguin in December 1991, Freedom From Fear and other Writings) in honour of her father, Aung San, the architect of modern Burma, who was assassinated in 1947 when she was two years old.
