Bastion of press freedom in an increasingly totalitarian state? Wooden horse of US interests attempting to destroy the social advances made by a genuinely pluralistic revolutionary government? Index on Censorship has dealt with La Prensa's tribulations under the Somoza regime (Index 6/1977) and the revolutionary Sandinista government (Index 2/1982). La Prensa still publishes, though it often falls foul of the government censors, and remains the centre of much polemic.
