Abstract
Bastion of press freedom in an increasingly totalitarian state? Wooden horse of US interests attempting to destroy the social advances made by a genuinely pluralistic revolutionary government? Index on Censorship has dealt with La Prensa's tribulations under the Somoza regime (Index 6/1977) and the revolutionary Sandinista government (Index 2/1982). La Prensa still publishes, though it often falls foul of the government censors, and remains the centre of much polemic. Here are the recent views of some of the protagonists from each side of the debate.
