Abstract
Interview with the president of the Santiago branch of the Chilean Journalists Association
A brutal disregard for freedom of expression has been one of the characteristics of the decade of military rule in Chile. By the end of 1983, discontent with General Augusto Pinochet's regime was increasingly widespread, with democratic opposition political forces regrouping and large numbers of people joining in monthly days of protest.
In this interview, Pablo Portales, a journalist and secretary general of the Santiago branch of the Chilean Journalists' Association, details the restrictions and pressures that journalists have had to contend with over the past decade.
