Abstract
Yves-Emmanuel Dogbé was imprisoned without trial for five months at the Camp de la Gendarmerie in Lomé, Togo, after he wrote a paper on education to be delivered at the 1977 Festival of African Arts and Culture (FESTAC). He was released from prison in an amnesty of November 1977. L'Incarcéré (‘The Prisoner’), from which we publish an extract here, is a novel based on the author's personal experience. Other chapters in the book describe the appalling conditions in the prison where he was held, and the fate of long-term prisoners. Nothing significant in the procedures and conditions Dogbé describes has since changed. L'Incarcéré will be published in Paris by Editions Akpagnon. We also publish a short introduction in which A. Mactar Gueye describes the author's career.
