Abstract

The road ahead is a comprehensive self-help guide to assist those touched by road trauma and an easy source of information for carers. Although written without an abundance of medical or psychological terminology, those significantly affected by road trauma may find the book a challenge. Those suffering anxiety, fatigue, depression and other symptoms as a result of a motor vehicle collision (not accident, as most motor vehicle collisions are not accidents) may find the scope of information overwhelming and the lists of symptoms/impairments disturbing. Fragile minds seek simple and uncomplicated answers. Those suffering from emotional trauma are more unstable, open to suggestion, and can be easily frightened by lists of psychological disturbances that may or may not apply to them. This information has more relevance to the carer who has the ability to sift through and assess the relevant information needed.
For those well on the way to recovery, the book may be more relevant and helpful. The book has a positive theme and relevant information for those capable of digesting it. It can never replace the trained therapist, appropriate medication or someone prepared to listen. The book may be more informative than therapeutic.
