Abstract
Throughout Europe, there is an ongoing debate about the future development and financing of health-care systems. A well-functioning system is a high social and political priority and as the countries of Europe draw closer together, an important local factor. Unquestionably, the greatest demands on the health-care system come from the increasingly elderly population and from advances in medical technology.
The main goal of the further development of healthcare in Germany must be to make sure that the population continues to be provided with a high standard of healthcare. Effective and mutually supportive protection against serious risks to health also needs to be ensured. We owe it to patients to create a health-care system with a secure future. Everyone involved in healthcare must work together to generate a modern system that creates incentives for optimum treatment, allows innovative, more efficient medical devices and technologies to be used without delay and guarantees the best possible use of existing information technologies for patients, users and all others associated with healthcare.
