Abstract
Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) distribution in highly developed generics markets must go different roads than in earlier days in order to be successful. This paper deals with the challenges and chances for today's API manufacturers in a changing environment. It has become crucial for API manufacturers to be part of successful generics development programmes in the generics industry. Service partners offer complete solutions for a launch of a new generic product on day one following patent expiration and so fill the pipelines of generics companies. It is as essential for API manufacturers to back the right horse as it is decisive in generics development to pick the right API partner. All or nothing at all - these are often the clear-cut choices.
