Abstract
Conclusions: From a colourful and tumultuous start at the time of State-hood, Queensland has provided care for the mentally ill in keeping with the sociopolitical conditions of the era influenced by the prevailing thera-peutic approach of moral treatment and custodial care tempered with humanity. Chronic underfunding and a diverse and scattered geography have influenced service provision throughout the century. Innovation and adaptation to changing scientific knowledge, destigmatisation, integration of services, and concern about human rights, however, ensure that Queensland can face the new millennium with confidence and optimism.
