“This was an exceptionally exciting year for JALA.”
This was an exceptionally exciting year for JALA. It started off with news from Thomson's Journal Citation Reports that JALA had been added to Thomson Reuter's Science Citation Index Expanded (also known as SciSearch), Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition, Biological Abstracts, and BIOSIS Previews. This meant that JALA would have an impact factor! JALA was added with the 2009 volume, so during 2011, Thomson's tracked citations to articles published in 2009 and 2010, and JALA's first impact factor will be announced in June of 2012.
More good news arrived in March when we learned JALA was accepted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine for indexing by MEDLINE, the largest component of PubMed. Because MEDLINE functions as an important resource for biomedical researchers worldwide, JALA authors now enjoy significantly increased opportunities for discoverability and citations.
Both of these achievements represent important milestones and underscore JALA's unique role in supporting the SLAS mission of providing education and facilitating information exchange throughout the laboratory science and technology community.
This year also saw the JALA Literature Highlights baton passed from long-time co-authors Kerstin Thurow, Ph.D., of the University of Rostock, Germany, and Hilmar Weinmann, Ph.D., of Bayer Schering Pharma in Berlin, Germany, to Tal Murthy, Ph.D., of Caliper Life Sciences in Hopkinton, MA, and Xiaole Mao, Ph.D., of Procter & Gamble in Mason, OH. Kerstin's and Hilmar's eight extraordinary years of volunteer service created a valuable legacy for which JALA will always be grateful.
As 2012 grows near, we look forward to welcoming two new members to the JALA Editorial Board—Daniel Kamei, Ph.D., of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles; and David Giljohann, Ph.D., of Aurasense in Evanston, IL. The editorial board is the engine that drives much of what it takes to publish six successful issues of JALA each year. Its members share seasoned insight and thoughtful guidance to the editorial development process, and they review manuscripts and recruit talented new authors. We are excited to add Dr. Kamei and Dr. Giljohann to the team.
And finally, we end this year with special thanks and appreciation for our publishing partners at Elsevier. After eight years of working together to create six excellent issues of JALA annually, SLAS is consolidating publishing operations for both of its journals (JALA and the Journal of Biomolecular Screening) with SAGE Publications. We look forward to continue to build a positive and productive future for our journals with SAGE and we wish our friends at Elsevier the best of luck.
