Abstract

All of these achievements tell ALA that it is on the right track with JALA.
As scientists, we know it is important that our work be properly validated. We have standards and guidelines to which we compare our processes and outcomes. We make adjustments to ensure that we achieve meaningful results. The same is true for the JALA publishing team.
JALA volunteers, staff, and publishing partners work hard to keep current with publishing standards, trends, and opportunities. In the past 12 months, these efforts have been solidly validated by the scientific publishing industry.
The American Society of Association Executives presented a first place Gold Circle Award to JALA for overall excellence in peer-reviewed journal publishing. The Society of National Association Publications honored JALA for scholarly journal design excellence with a bronze Excel Award. Association Trends magazine recognized JALA for general excellence with a bronze All-Media Award.
The scientific community also recognized JALA's increasing importance in 2007. JALA was welcomed to the Compendex and Inspec indexing databases, bringing the total of the academic and professional databases in which JALA is included to nine, including ALA's own JALA Online; Elsevier's ScienceDirect, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, and Compendex; American Chemical Society's CAS+ and SciFinder; Royal Society of Chemistry's Analytical Abstracts; Institute of Engineering and Technology's Inspec; and CINAHL. These resources make JALA available to a broad spectrum of users, from hands-on health care providers to informatics engineers.
JALA was also featured prominently in the media in 2007. The international journal Science Editor, published by the Council of Science Editors, showcased JALA's role as a valuable educational tool in a feature story entitled “Mentorship at a Small Scientific Journal: The Case of JALA.” In addition, a special issue of Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, published by Elsevier, featured a collection of 17 original reports, technical briefs, and tutorials that had been published originally in JALA.
ALA was also delighted to extend its agreement with JALA publishing partner Elsevier in 2007. We are proud to know that a publisher of Elsevier's stature recognizes the value of JALA's unique scientific niche, and is so well prepared to support it.
All of these achievements tell ALA that it is on the right track with JALA. Now, we need to ensure that you agree. JALA will conduct a reader survey in the ALA Member Center at LabAutomation2008. If you plan to join us for the conference, please take a moment to stop and tell us what you think about JALA. If you will not be in Palm Springs, please know that your comments are always welcome and appreciated.
Sincerely,
Douglas Gurevitch, P.E.
