Educational objectives: To appreciate the general phenomena of somatization, conversion, and posturing disorders; to understand the symptoms, behavioral manifestations, psychometric and epidemiologic findings, and theories related to these problems; to recognize acoustic-perceptual and visual attributes of conversion aphonia/dysphonia, and pitch/register disturbances resulting from functional malposturing of the phonatory mechanism; to implement criteria and guidelines for identification of symptoms; and to incorporate procedures and specific techniques for removal of symptoms and effective patient management.
