Various small amounts of fluorine-containing polyols (F-diol MW=3700) were introduced in the soft segment of the anionic aqueous polyurethanes (PUs) to examine the effect of the F-diol on the properties of aqueous anionic PUs. The hard segments in the anionic aqueous PUs consisted of 4,4'-methylene bis(cyclohexylisocyanate) (H₁₂MDI), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) and cyclohexanediamine (CHDA, cis./trans=80/20). Both mechanical and water resistance properties of aqueous PUs were improved after introducing a small amount of F-diol in the soft segment of the aqueous PU due to the increased intermolecular forces and crystallinity as well as the hydrophobic characteristic of the F-diol. Thermal analysis of both DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) for the F-diol modified aqueous PU indicated that both intermolecular forces and crystallinity increased with increasing the concentration of the F-diol. However both increased intermolecular forces and crystallinity could result in a negative effect on the interfacial adhesion.

Two types of urethane ionomers (cationomers and anionomers) were prepared and their structure - properties relationships examined. The mechanical properties and glass transition temperatures (Tg) of urethane cationomers increased with decreasing molecular weight of the polyols, and increasing concentrations of quaternary ammonium ions and degree of quatemization. The mechanical properties and Tg's of the cationomers decreased when isophorone diisocyanate (1PDI) was substituted by 4,4'-methylene bis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI). Comparing a series of N-alkyldiethanolamine chain extenders in urethane cationomers, N-methyldiethanolamine (N-MDEA) based - cationomers exhibited the best properties.

Both mechanical properties and Tg's of urethane anionomers increased with increasing ionic potential (φ) or charge-to-distance ratio (q/a) in non-transition mono-and divalent metals based anionomers. However, no relationship between φ or q/a and mechanical properties or Tg's could be established in the transition divalent metals - based anionomers.

Some interesting applications of urethane ionomers in foams and coatings were investigated which show many potential applications of urethane ionomers in various industries.
