Verbal interaction and problem-solving behavior of small cooperative peer groups were observed while these groups worked on a computer-assisted (non-programming) problem-solving task. The purpose of the study was to identify problem-solving behaviors which relate to success within this context. Thirty-six fourth grade students were assigned to groups of three to form six groups of high and six of average academic ability. All groups used a nonprogramming version of Logo turtle graphics to reproduce a given line design on the computer screen. Results indicate that there was no relationship between success and ability, and that successful groups asked more task-related questions, spent more time on strategy, and reached higher levels of strategy elaboration than did unsuccessful groups. High ability groups made a greater number of long task statements than did average groups, bindings are discussed within the theoretical frameworks of social cognition and modeling. Instructional implications, including those for the development of computer-assisted learning materials for peer group problem solving, are also discussed.

Various evaluation forms and reviews used to evaluate instructional software are compared with regard to the criteria employed in their assessments, and the usefulness and appropriateness of these criteria for making instructional decisions are discussed. Among the evaluation forms considered are those developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Science Teachers Association, and the Software Evaluation Project at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Software awards such as those sponsored by Classroom Computer Learning and reviews by monthly publications such as Teaching and Computers and Classroom Computer Learning are also considered. Although certain criteria are represented on nearly all of the evaluation forms and reviews, other criteria appear on a more limited basis. Differences between evaluation forms and reviews are discussed, and limitations in current approaches to software evaluation are identified — e.g., concern for valid principles of learning and teaching.

Preschool children's preferential selection and recall of words presented in a computer microworld was assessed as a function of action and sound. Forty preschoolers, equally distributed by sex, were randomly assigned to one of four versions of a microworld. Within each version, twenty-four sprite objects were randomly assigned properties of action and sound. The design was counterbalanced so that across the four versions, each sprite assumed all possible factorial combinations of action and sound. As expected, children preferentially selected and later recalled more words presented with action than words presented without action. Although children selected sounds, sounds interfered with children's recall of linguistic information. Results support an action superiority hypothesis and an auditory interference hypothesis. The practical application is to use action as an integral component of educational computer software designed for young children.

CSILE, which stands for Computer-Supported Intentional Learning Environments, is an educational knowledge media system. CSILE allows information in several media (text, drawings, graphs, timelines, etc.) to be entered into a common database where it is available to be retrieved, linked, commented on, rated, and so forth. The environments and operations of CSILE are designed to support students in more purposeful and mature, or intentional, processing of information. In this article eleven principles, based on recent cognitive research, are suggested for designing computer environments that support intentional learning. These principles include making knowledge-construction activities overt, maintaining attention to learning goals as opposed to other goals of an activity, providing process-relevant feedback, and giving students responsibility for contributing to each other's learning. Applications of these principles in CSILE are described, as well as observations from the first year of school try-out.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which gender and prior computer exposure (has a computer at home; participated in a computer course; knows how to work with computers) affect students' attitudes toward computers prior to computer instruction in school. An attitude questionnaire including cognitive and affective attitude scales was administered to 222 Israeli pupils in grades 8 through 10 who study in schools where computers have not yet been introduced. The results showed that prior computer exposure (in particular, having a computer at home), had a stronger effect on attitudes toward computers than sex. Pupils owning computers were more motivated to become familiar with computers; felt a stronger need for computers in their lives and had more positive affective attitudes toward computers than pupils who don't have computers at home. Sex differences in affective and cognitive attitudes were also observed where boys had significantly more positive affective attitudes toward computers than girls. They perceived computers as being more “enjoyable,” “special,” “important,” “friendly,” and “cheaper” than girls. Furthermore, boys tended to hold more stereotyped attitudes about who is capable of using computers and had more positive attitudes toward the computer as a medium of instruction than girls.

One of the potential advantages of computer-based instruction (CBI) is individualization of instruction. However, this goal has not been fully realized in practice, due largely to limitations of natural language understanding and to combinatorial explosion. It is nonetheless possible to develop CBI programs which can adapt to students, depending on their performance, by adjusting the length of computer-guided practice exercises and computer-based tests. The validity of this approach is supported empirically. The number of questions can be significantly reduced for many individuals, while mastery and nonmastery decisions remain highly accurate.
