There has been a growing interest in the phenomenon of abusive supervision in the last two decades through theory development and empirical investigations in management literature. In particular, educational scholars have paid attention to this issue with different terms such as ‘dark side of leadership’, ‘mistreatment’, ‘bullying’ or ‘abusive supervision’. This research provides insights into the relationship of abusive supervision with withdrawal and revenge behaviours of teachers, using a sample of 330 teachers working in public primary and secondary schools in Turkey. Despite its low rate, abusive supervision has a predictive potential on revenge and withdrawal. It was found that as teachers’ teaching experience decreased, withdrawal and revenge tendencies increased. Male teachers tended to respond with withdrawal and revenge more than females when they were abusively supervised. Lastly, primary school teachers were more likely to respond with withdrawal and revenge than secondary school teachers in times of abusive supervision.

Researchers have shown an increased interest in the way teachers use their knowledge about language (KAL) to enhance student understanding and learning. This qualitative case study investigated first- and second-grade teachers’ use of KAL in Arabic. We investigated the linguistic transitions from standard Arabic to spoken Arabic made by the teachers during mathematics lessons. The results suggested that Arab-speaking mathematics teachers were aware of the gap between home language (Spoken Arabic) and school language (Modern Standard Arabic) and used linguistic transition as a teaching strategy to develop academic thinking and behaviour among their students. The results suggested that Arab teachers built a non-formal bilingual education programme where the two languages were used to teach mathematics. Despite the requirement to use Modern Standard Arabic, participants bridged the gap between the languages, which suggests an inherent understanding that ‘language and identity are ultimately inseparable’.

This study aims to show how the integration of passive and active learning approaches contributes towards the significant understanding of problems associated with sustainable development. To do this, a case study from the municipality of San Miguel de Achiutla in Oaxaca, Mexico, is used as a general method, with the specific procedure including an instrument based on secondary sources representing the passive learning phase, as well as an instrument created on the basis of primary sources, designed in relation to the active learning component. The passive learning phase enabled us to identify variables pertaining to the highly vulnerable dimensions of sustainable development, and to also detect areas in which there is a deficit of information, since not all data are available, while the active learning phase revealed the causes of vulnerability from the perspective of different agents, including those who experienced the issues directly. In view of the above, we conclude that rather than being exclusive, these two different approaches should in fact be complementary.
