Abstract
This paper discusses the linear relationship between stress and strain for an aluminum specimen and shows how its mechanical properties and associated stress distribution may be determined. This linear relationship forms the basis of the theory of elasticity, which is widely used to determine stress or strain in structural elements under a specific tensile loading condition. Study of the plastic behavior of structural elements is concerned with the analysis of stress and strains in the plastic as well as elastic ranges.
