Euler column buckling and the problem of overturning instability of rigid struts supported by elastic springs is presented in a unified manner, as opposed to the traditional approach where these two problems are usually taught quite separately. This more generalized treatment of basic undergraduate stability theory also enables the associated bifurcation problem to encompass the possible instance of trifurcation.
