Two simple experiments to demonstrate the physical meaning of Fourier expansion and Fourier transformation are presented. The only experimental setups needed for these experiments are a function generator and a laptop or a personal computer. Free downloadable end-user Matlab- based software for carrying out the experiments is made available. The two programs are designed such that no prior Matlab programming skills are assumed. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the physical idea behind the Fourier mathematical analysis technique. Such experimentation may form the bases of further advanced signal analysis procedures.
