Abstract
Design activities have become a feature of most undergraduate engineering courses, but their use begs the question: What do we expect from our students? The approach taken here is that students must demonstrate effective project management coupled with realistic but imaginative engineering practice. Information should be sourced and used effectively with experimentation to justify the devised solution. This paper dissects the conduct of a design project which ranks high in the author's experience and includes analysis of the students' perceptions of the activity.
