This paper describes a functional method, using readily available spreadsheet add-ins, of simplifying the problem of estimating the parameters of component failure distributions, typical of those encountered in electrical / electronic systems. The paper includes an example, using data taken from a failure test, conducted on a steering column switch in the automotive industry to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
