This paper presents an expert system tool for the design of PID-based position controllers. The implementation of this tool has been carried out using a MATLAB software environment. The rules for building up this expert system tool have been based on experience gained from literature and from experimental simulation results. Two design examples demonstrate the usefulness of this developed tool. The tool can be used as an educational aid in teaching the design of PID-based position controllers.
