Abstract
The origins of the National Library of Luxembourg (Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg, BnL) date back to 1798. This article provides an historical overview, outlines the core missions and describes the collections. Because several languages are spoken in Luxembourg, the BnL offers interface menus to the catalogues in French, German and English. The BnL coordinates the national network bibnet.lu of Luxembourgish libraries and is maintaining their integrated library information systems. It cooperates with the library of the University of Luxembourg and the documentation centres of three research centres as a member and coordinator of the Consortium Luxembourg for the acquisition and management of electronic publications. A programme to digitize the country's printed heritage has begun with historic newspapers. The BnL contributes to the Europeana digital library.
