Abstract
This article gives a description of the National Library of Uganda beginning with a brief overview of the concept of African repositories. It analyses the context within which the National Library exists as part of Uganda's documentary heritage, briefly describing the various institutions where this heritage is found. The genesis of the idea of a national library for Uganda is given followed by a description of the establishment of the National Library of Uganda. The functions of the National Library, namely legal deposit and the supervisory role over public libraries, are discussed in detail, followed by the services that the NLU offers. The challenges currently faced by the NLU are then examined. Lastly, the article gives a short analysis of the prospects for the future.
