Abstract
National bibliographic agencies can play a crucial role in the creation of standards and tools for the recording of and access to resources and bibliographic information, and contribute to their development and continual maintenance. The National Central Library of Florence has recently created a new system of indexing which is intended to be used by all Italian libraries. The new system is designed to represent a real renovation and re-foundation of subject indexing in light of modern principles and standards. This paper deals with the contribution offered by the Italian National Bibliographic Agency (which edits and publishes the Italian National Bibliography) in the creation, development, and maintenance of the new indexing system through the skills and knowledge which were gained by the actual application of this everyday tool.
