Abstract
Libraries and Archives have long played an important role in social development. This paper presents an historical review of academic requirements for Library and Information Studies in Spain, from the granting of university status to the development of Spanish university training in Library and Information Science. The case of Complutense University is analysed with respect to both its historical evolution and its curricula, which have been adapted to European Union guidelines, specifically to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Other issues considered include the creation of the Faculty of Documentation Science at Complutense University, the new Degree in Information and Documentation and the Masters in Information Management, Libraries and Archives.
