Abstract
Background
Endometriosis is one of the most common benign gynecological diseases, causing pain and infertility in women of reproductive age. The etiology of the disorder is complex but probably involves the interaction of several environmental factors with different gene loci. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between Glu298Asp polymorphism of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene and the pathogenesis of endometriosis.
Methods
Fifty-eight women with an endoscopic diagnosis of endometriosis and 40 age-matched normal females were included in this study.
Results
The study showed an absence of statistically significant differences as regards genotype distribution of the Glu298Asp polymorphism between women with and without endometriosis.
Conclusions
This study showed the absence of association between Glu298Asp polymorphism of the eNOS gene and risk of endometriosis in the Egyptian population.
