This article reviews the current problems of the UK railway industry and in
particular the effective re- nationalisation of Railtrack by the government
during 2001. The present state of the industry is placed in the context of the
process of privatisation, and of the historical development of the sector. It
reviews the current literature and media debate that deals with rail
privatisation.
