Abstract
Systematic review briefs provide a summary of the findings from systematic reviews evaluated in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Evidence-Based Practice Program. Each systematic review brief summarizes the evidence on a theme related to a systematic review topic. This systematic review brief presents findings from the systematic review on the effectiveness of interventions addressing physical activity in adults living with and beyond cancer.

Clinical Scenario
As more people are surviving cancer, some have called upon redefining cancer as a chronic condition due to the long-lasting effects of treatment (Baxter et al., 2017) and the need for interventions aimed at prevention through lifestyle changes and health management activities. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) can address the health management of adults living with and beyond cancer by developing, managing, and maintaining health and wellness routines to support physical activity and reduce the chronic side effects of cancer that impact occupational performance (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020). Specifically, lifestyle changes such as reducing sedentary behavior and increasing physical activity by using health management activities can additionally impact cancer-related fatigue and cancer-related cognitive impairments that create barriers to occupational performance.
Summary of Key Findings
Three systematic reviews were included related to interventions focusing on physical activity for people after a cancer diagnosis (Table 1). The levels of evidence used in this review are from Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (2009). The strength-of-evidence designations are based on the guidelines of the U.S Preventive Services Task Force (2018).

Bottom Line for Occupational Therapy Practice
OTPs can treat adults living with and beyond cancer with a focus on lifestyle changes and health management interventions aiming to increase physical activity, thus reducing the impact of side effects and improving overall occupational performance. In the included studies, for women with breast cancer, the use of motivational strategies and behavior-change theories and approaches provided a positive effect on change in physical activity. Particularly, OTPs could integrate common behavior change techniques such as goal setting and revision, planning, monitoring physical activity levels, and shaping knowledge through feedback to change physical activity. OTPs could apply motivational improvement strategies to improve health outcomes over time. Specifically, a combination of behavioral change-based strategies such as pedometers and counseling, print material, and/or motivational interviewing in OT intervention is recommended to improve adherence to physical activity in women with breast cancer. Mobile health interventions (mHealth) that include personal contact components are likely more effective in increasing physical activity than mHealth interventions without such components among those with cancer. Therefore, OTPs could integrate mHealth interventions that include personal contact components such as in-person sessions, phone calls, or group consultations alongside activity trackers and apps to increase the physical activity of those living with and beyond cancer.
