Abstract
This article about the ECE Statistical Division is the first in a series on the statistical offices in the major international organizations. The international “system” is a complex one, and it is hoped that these articles might help to shed some light on it.
The Conference of European Statisticians, and its international statistics work programme, has as its secretariat the Statistical Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva. The Conference has developed over its 40 years but has changed most radically in the last five years since the dramatic political and economic upheaval in Europe. The nature, and history, of the Conference and the ECE Statistical Division, and their relationship with other international organs are briefly described.
