Abstract
The Conference of European Statisticians was among the first fora of international statistical cooperation to recognize the importance of environment statistics. Work was actually planned and executed since the early seventies. A first period of “tâtonnement” in this new area of statistical activities was followed by work on methodological issues, statistical concepts, their definition and the development of international standard classifications in areas of environmental concern. The results of this work have recently been used for the compilation of “Environment Statistics in Europe and North America”. In addition, this statistical compendium includes a monograph of the Baltic Sea.
