Abstract
In the countries of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) region, the need for information, especially statistical information, is growing rapidly and will continue to grow. Among many other purposes, good statistics are essential for effective planning and for monitoring economic and social development. The demand is not only for more statistics, but also for improvements in quality, accuracy and timeliness.
To help meet this need, the ECE, together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is undertaking a regional project on the exchange of experience and information between interested European countries. The national statistical offices of 19 ECE countries participate in the joint work on the design of software products of practical use, including applied research, development and testing software systems. It is foreseen that the software products, as well as the methodology developed within the framework of the programme will be made largely available to developing countries.
