Abstract
The work undertaken by the Conference of European Statisticians on the international development and harmonization of social and demographic statistics is highly diversified. The elaboration of recommendations for the 1960, 1970 and 1980 rounds of censuses of population and housing for the ECE region constitutes a major achievement in this field. The second major long-term activity of the Conference consists of its contribution to efforts to develop a framework for the integration of social and demographic statistics. In addition, the Conference is engaged in improving statistics in various fields, such as statistics of education, housing statistics, health statistics, migration statistics, cultural statistics, statistics of households and families, manpower statistics, etc. Such work is often carried out jointly with other international organizations with interests in these fields. The work pertains to conceptual issues, theoretical system-building, classifications, the improvement of data sources and statistical procedures and methodological problems.
