Abstract
Five general directions of work characterize the current contribution of the Conference of European Statisticians to the international development and harmonization of economic statistics. Firstly, the Conference is involved in the revision of systems of national accounts and balances, including the elaboration of linkages between the SNA and the MPS systems. Secondly, the Conference assumes an increasing role in the regional implementation of the International Comparison Project (ICP). Thirdly, the Conference has promoted a series of bilateral and multilateral comparisons on production, national income and productivity. Fourthly, the up-dating and harmonization of various standard international classifications of both economic activities and commodities are pursued intensely. The Conference develops conversion tables between UN classifications and classifications used by the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. Fifthly, the necessary co-ordination both within economic statistics and between economic statistics as a whole and other major statistical systems (socio-demographic and environment statistics) is given a great deal of emphasis.
