Abstract
The main purpose of the work was to study the process of plastic strain zone evolution ahead of crack tip during loading a specimen with the crack and to describe this process from the view point of modern concepts on thermally‐activated plastic flow of metals. In accordance with above task the research was divided into two parts. Part I: Investigation into the process of plastic flow of a material using the test results of smooth specimens and assessment of parameters of an elementary event to the thermally‐activated plastic strain. Part II: Investigation into the fracture process of a metal using test results of specimens with fatigue cracks and the interpretation of the obtained data based on the results in Part I.
