Transfusion-related hemolysis and subsequent necrotizing enterocolitis in a premature infant with Clostridium infection

Abstract

Packed-Red Blood Cell (PRBC) transfusion has been associated with subsequent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We report a documented case of a premature infant presenting with severe intravascular hemolysis and NEC after PRBC transfusion as symptoms of underlying Clostridium perfringens infection in the bowel.
