Abstract
This paper considers some of the major issues arising in the design of an all-optical transport layer for telecommunication networks. The results presented relate to a European funded project “Multi-wavelength Transport Network” (MWTN). In particular the discussion focuses on the design of the optical node architecture, transmission limitations associated with the analogue nature of the network and network issues such as wavelength contention.
