Abstract
Output of services is increasing rapidly and accounts for more than half of the nation's gross domestic product, yet there is no current official measure of service production. This paper discusses a new measure of service output, the Wharton Index of Service Production (WISP). Based on employment data and productivity trends, this measure is being computed on a current basis and provides a long time span of data for numerous service sectors.
