Total scattering cross section (σ
_T
) of a PEC cylindrical scatterer is a function of it's scattering amplitude and is closely related to scatterer's cross section. It is difficult to determineσ
_T
analytically for arbitrary cross sections of scatterer, especially for random cross sections. Defining some bounds on the value of σ
_T
is therefore very helpful in its estimation. In this paper, σ
_T
of canonical shaped objects is used to define bounds on σ
_T
of random cylinder. The geometrical parameters of canonical scatterers are obtained from the geometric parameters of the random cylinder. A formulation is also developed to approximate the value of σ
_T
from its bounding values. This work therefore, helps to predict theσ
_T
of a random cylinder from its geometrical parameters, without solving an electromagnetic boundary value problem.
