Abstract
The EU has initiated a programme for the development of advanced telecommunications networks within the EU. A vital part of the development of these networks is that they achieve interoperability with other emerging advanced networks. Such interoperability is important in terms of pushing forward the information society. However, the development of an all embracing network environment still faces considerable hurdles.
