Abstract
The British Library Research & Development Department commissioned a number of leading figures in the information world to forecast the probable changes to the information environment up to the year 2000 caused by technological, economic, social and other factors. The report of this study, Information UK 2000, was used as the basis for planning what the British Library's strategic objectives should be in preparation for the Millennium. Following consultation with the UK information community these objectives have now been set. They are described with particular emphasis on the development and exploitation of electronic information and the networking of services, which, it is thought, will increasingly be delivered to the individual at his or her desk. Further planning is currently under way to determine what systems are needed to support these services within the framework of the British Library's IT infrastructure policy.
