Abstract
Combination of questionnaire and interview instruments was used to obtain information from the Head Librarians of 45 major Nigerian special libraries in government supported institutions. The questionnaire dealt with the years they learnt about information technology and its applications in special library services, the methods of training in information technology and their applications in special library services.
Analysis of information obtained revealed that those who first formally learnt about information technology and its applications in special library services began in 1964. It also revealed methods the 45 Head Librarians used to learn about information technology and its applications in special library services. The methods were catalogued and discussed. Computing skills of library and information science educators, available information technology as well as constraints of training in information technology in Nigerian library schools were also discussed. Suggestions were then made for improved training in information technology.
