Abstract
There are almost a thousand university library establishments, of various sorts, in Japan. Statistics are given here, in graphic presentations, for holdings (books and journals), annual acquisitions levels (books and serials), and overal comparative expenditures on materials (Japanese-and non-Japanese-language). The paper further discusses interlibrary cooperation with special reference to interlending, the provision of services to external users, and the national Science Information System network.
