Abstract
Following a discussion on problems and general characteristics of handling Sino-Japanese (kanji) characters by computer for bibliographic purposes [1], a further presentation was made on data level such as characteristics of information in Japanese language—for example multiple descriptions of a single data element and its adaptation to the ISO 2709 Communication Format as the SIST 04 (Japanese Standard of Information for Science and Technology), and special features and advantages for retrieval by kanji character [2]. In this article, data-base problems in Japanese language are to be explored, and general features of data bases in Japanese are discussed—such as requirements for data-base production, storage, search/retrieval, and potentialities of kanji characters in data bases.
