Abstract
The paper considers the quantifiable characteristics of bibliographic databases from the point of view of the online user. It gives a brief overview of database properties which have been studied quantitatively: coverage, currency, costs, accuracy, indexing and retrieval efficiency. It indicates the value of such studies to the online user and where further studies would be useful.
