Abstract
The present state of the information industry is compared to that in 1960; from that comparison some predictions are being made for the next 20-year period. The further development of the information industry will be determined by three factors: technological innovation, socio-economic developments and the ability of industry to produce viable systems. A trend towards unification of components of the industry is predicted, together with one of elimination of intermediaries in the information flow.
