Abstract
Tests have been made in a water tunnel to determine the effect of cylinder roughness on the performance of a model of the rotating cylinder rudder. The measurements showed that the side force developed was increased by using a rough cylinder and an additional improvement was obtained by increasing the cylinder speed ratio above the ratio found to be the optimum with a smooth cylinder.
Further tests showed that increasing the gap between the cylinder and the main body of the rudder decreased the efficiency of the rudder.
