Abstract
The frictional resistance of oscillating rough and smooth surfaces is presented. The turbulent boundary layer problem associated with the harmonic oscillations of the surface is solved analytically by using a two-layer time invariant eddy viscosity model. The eddy viscosity in the inner layer increases quadratically with the distance from the surface. In the outer layer the eddy viscosity is taken as a constant. The amplitude and the phase of the surface shear stress are presented for rough and smooth surfaces, together with comparisons with previous experimental and semi-empirical results.
