Abstract
A computer simulation program for the combustion proces in diesel engines has been developed with the objective to create a design tool which has a predictive nature and which is economical in use. In this first publication the reasons for the choice of the type of model will be explained. With the help of experimental research methods a physical experimental ‘Discrete droplet model’ has been developed. Methods for the determination of the initial conditions of the combustion proces – the fuel injection and combustion air conditions – and the verification of the simulation model will be discussed. The mathematical formulation of the model and experimental verification of the calculated results will be discussed in the second publication.
