Abstract
The determination of a ship’s directional stability and also the input of valid hydrodynamic data on Ship Handling Simulators, make necessary the estimation of the ship’s hydrodynamic coefficients. A three dimensional potential flow analysis is shown to give reliable predictions of acceleration coefficients for bodies manoeuvring in deep or shallow waters and in canals. This paper presents a set of computed acceleration coefficients for a family of tankers of various principal dimensions but of block coefficient around 0.80. From the presented data it is now possible to obtain acceleration coefficients in deep and shallow waters for any ship of similar fullness.
